The fall of the Kamakura Shogunate, the rise of the Ashikaga Shogunate
The Fall of the Kamakura Shogunate: In 1192 Minamoto Yoritomo became the Shogun and created a new government, the Kamakura Clan. It was organized more simply and was more efficient. After 7 years of ruling, Minamoto Yoritome died. After this there were many battles for power between the Kamakura Clan and the government of Kyoto. Finally in 1221 the Kamakura Clan defeated the government of Kyoto and gain complete control over Japan. Over the following years people were starting to become more religious and a new law came into place. Many people didn't like the law as it changed the tradition of Japanese culture and beliefs. During this time the Shogun was losing power. Years later the Mongols had conquered China and were now threatening to do the same to Japan. The Mongols invaded. The Japanese prepared well and were able to hold them off for many weeks. The Mongols were preparing for a second invasion but had to withdraw because of the bad weather making it harder to send in ships. Japan were waiting for a third invasion but the Mongols couldn't attack because of many problems in their own country. This resulted in a major loss for Japan as they had spent lots to prepare for the attacks but could never make any profit since they weren't attacked. This is when the Kamakura government fell. The Hojo Clan took over the government of Japan.
The Rise of the Ashikaga Shogunate:
While the Hojo Clan had power over Japan they didn't give enough of rewards to the people.
Finally Go-Daigo who was the Emperor at the time some of the Daimyo to rebel
against the Hojo Government. To prevent this form happening the Kamakura Clan
told the people of the Ashikaga Clan to stop this action. For unknown reasons
the Ashikaga Clan decided to turn against the Kamakura Clan and won. No people
were starting to turn against Go-Daigo. Japan was divided in two; the followers
of Go-Daigo and the people who were against him. Go-Daigo decided to flee and
the Ashikaga clan took power.
